Coffee FAQ’s

Why do they call it a “Cup Of Joe”?

It appears that this saying originates with a Josephus Daniels.  Mr Daniels was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson as Secretary of the Navy in 1913. As the story goes during his tenure he enacted sweeping reforms.

Two in particular were the introduction of women in service and the abolishment of the officers “wine mess”.  Thereafter the strongest thing that could be served on a Navy ship was a cup of coffee. It was during that time and over a number of years that a cup of coffee became known as “a cup of Joe”
