Puerto Rican Gourmet Coffee Wholesale Costs Jump 30% as Puerto Rico Government Allows Price Increase on 2006 Coffee Exports

Parlin New Jersey, March 23, 2006 Gourmet coffee retailer TastesofTheWorld.net holds prices down following dramatic spike in the wholesale cost of Puerto Rican coffee. Premium Gourmet Coffee growers from Puerto Rico have increased wholesale prices to retailers by about 30 percent. Puerto Rico, population of 3.9 million, consumes most of the coffee produced there.

Puerto Rico will import 10 million pounds (4.5 million kilograms) of coffee in 2006 after rains destroyed much of the island's key crop in 2005, according to an AP story, January 16. The harvested crops total 18.5 million pounds for 2005, according to Jose Orlando Fabre, head of the agriculture department, compared to 2004 coffee harvest of 22.5 million pounds.

The Puerto Rican Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO), a government entity, revisited a years old pricing structure in September of 2005 and allowed coffee producers to increase prices as an alternative to government subsidies. The sudden sharp price spike for Puerto Rican gourmet coffee has taken US importers and retailers by surprise. Exporters appear to be passing a price hike onto consumers in 2006. Puerto Rico exports few gourmet coffee beans and those able to enjoy the Caribbean grown treat are paying substantially more for Puerto Rican Beans.

As a United States Territory, Puerto Rico requires that workers are paid minimum wage, so harvesting costs are higher than in most other coffee producing countries. Very little coffee is exported due to the relatively small production levels and demand for the premium gourmet coffees of Puerto Rico makes these beans a rare treat.

Exports of the rare Puerto Rican beans are more expensive along with other prized Caribbean grown gourmet coffees such as Jamaica Blue Mountain. Puerto Rican gourmet coffees have been rated by gourmet coffee taster, Ken Davids of www.CoffeeReview.com as "full bodied, roundly sweet, with low but vibrant acidity."

Puerto Rican Yauco Selecto, Alto Grande and Café Tres Picachos blends were previously available for between $20 and $25 per pound. The price spike sends Puerto Rican gourmet coffee closer to$35 per pound from most coffee retailers. TastesofTheWorld.net is holding prices below that of other retailers for this premium selection of fine Puerto Rican gourmet coffees by raising their prices just fifteen percent, instead of the 35% increases seen from some online retailers.
